Whitehalls History

Whitehalls Auctioneers & Appraisers takes pride in its longstanding presence in Hamilton and the surrounding area of Southern Ontario. We provide professional auction and appraisal services of good quality antiques, fine art and collectibles with honest, knowledgeable and enthausiastic staff.

In the 1940s an auction hall was started by John Smith in Hamilton, he was instrumental in securing trust company work in the region and was the original auctioneer. In the mid 1970s James (Jim) E. Whitehall and his staff began to assist John with his auctions at 140 Locke Street South, Hamilton. At this time Jim transitioned to be the primary auctioneer. John Smith retired in the late 1970s and his business was transferred to Jim, who also renamed the business Whitehall’s Auction.

In 1989 the Locke Street location was sold and the auctions were held at the Canadian Martyrs Church Hall on Main Street West, at this time Jayne Del Guidice began working for Jim. When James E. Whitehall retired in 1996, management of the auction house was transferred to his stepdaughter Jayne del Giudice, who took over all facets of the company including auctioneering at the Saturday sales. Just over 18 years ago the Locke Street building was sold. Since that time, auctions have been held at the Canadian Martyrs Church hall at the corner of Main Street West and Emerson Street in Hamilton.

In December 2012 Jayne announced her retirement and sold Whitehall’s Auction to Stephen McCanse, Hugh Lawson and Jennifer Donnelly. They renamed the business Whitehalls Auctioneers & Appraisers. With their colleagues, Stephen and Hugh continue and augment the professionalism, expertise, and high regard for client services that are the hallmark of Whitehalls.
